Bula vinaka shoppers, for many a trip to the supermarket has become an exercise in careful budgeting and thinking. Shoppers walk through aisles comparing prices, calculating what they can afford, and often putting items back on shelves as the cost of living continues to rise every week.

In such difficult economic times, something as simple as a missing price tag is not a minor inconvenience anymore, it is a failure of transparency and a disregard for the consumers who keep businesses operating.

Recent market surveillance by the Consumer Council of Fiji revealsthis worrying trend where so many products have missing displayed prices as well as shelf prices that do not match what is charged at the checkout.

This is not a new issue. But the fact that such findings continue to emerge despite repeated warnings raises serious questions on whether some supermarkets are doing enough to uphold their obligations to customers.

Supermarkets often explain these discrepancies by pointing to frequent price adjustments, staff shortages, human error, or technical failures in pricing systems. As a shopper what do you do when price tags are missing? Often, you would reach out to find a staff in the store to help.

While these challenges of missing price tags may be genuine, they cannot become an excuse for retailers.

Retailing is a business built on trust, and ensuring accurate pricing is one of the most basic responsibilities a business owes its customers.

The economic climate makes this issue even more significant.

Fiji, like many countries, has experienced increased pressure from global supply chain disruptions, rising shipping costs, inflation, and fluctuating import prices.

These factors should force supermarkets to adjust prices more regularly, and also increase the need for stronger monitoring systems, better staff training, and more frequent shelf audits. For the average consumer, the impact of a missing or incorrect price tag goes beyond inconvenience.

It creates uncertainty at a time when every dollar matters.

A parent shopping for a family may choose one product over another because it appears more affordable, only to discover at the checkout that the actual price is higher. Others may avoid buying an item altogether because there is no price displayed and they do not wish to face embarrassment or confusion at the cashier. That is not fair.

Transparent pricing is a fundamental consumer right.

Shoppers should not have to search for a staff to ask the cost of basic goods, nor should they have to constantly question whether the price displayed on a shelf is the same price that will appear on their receipt.

The responsibility to provide clear and accurate pricing lies with the retailer, not the customer. The persistence of these breaches also highlights the need for stronger accountability. Supermarkets should not wait for inspections by regulators before correcting problems. Daily checks improved digital inventory systems, dedicated staff responsible for price verification, and a culture of compliance should become standard practice. At the same time, consumers must be encouraged to speak up.

Reporting pricing discrepancies helps authorities identify recurring problems and ensures businesses remain accountable. Consumer awareness and active enforcement go hand in hand in creating a fair marketplace. The issue of missing price tags may appear small compared to larger economic challenges facing the nation, but it speaks to a much bigger principle of fairness.

At a time when households are making difficult choices about budgets, food, school expenses, transport, and daily necessities, every cent counts.

Shoppers deserve certainty, honesty, and respect when they enter a supermarket.

Businesses that value their customers must recognise that transparency is a duty.

Clear prices build confidence, strengthens consumer trust, and creates a marketplace where both businesses and shoppers thrive fairly.

Happy shopping everyone and call out for missing price tags !
