Mere Tukai continues to rise with quiet determination. In the heart of Narere, where roadside stalls come alive with colour and conversation, she takes her place each day, not out of routine, but out of responsibility.

With steady hands and a spirit shaped by decades of hardship, she remains committed to providing for her family, proving that strength is not defined by age, but by purpose.

Originally from the island of Qoma in Tailevu, Mrs Tukai is now a familiar face in the Narere community. Operating her small market stall is more than just a source of income, it is also a sense of independence and comfort.

“I’m 74 years old, but I don’t want my age to stop me from providing for my family,” she said.

Mrs Tukai previously worked for the Fiji Police Force before retiring. After losing her partner, she raised her seven children on her own, a journey she describes as difficult, but one guided by faith and perseverance.

Today, she lives with her youngest son, a police officer, and continues to contribute to household expenses through her small business. She admits however that life has become more challenging with the rising cost of living.

“Back then, life was easier. Now everything is expensive, and people are struggling every day.”

Groceries are bought from New World Supermarket, located just a short distance from her home. Her daughter-in-law usually assists with the shopping, with the family spending close to $300 to cover their needs for two weeks. “The money I earn, I use to help the family as much as I can.”

Despite financial pressures, Mrs Tuwai finds joy in giving rather than saving.

She emphasises on healthy food options and at times the family relies on her market produce for fresh greens. Attending to her market is her physical and mental exercise

“For my business, I don’t keep money. What I earn, I give to my children and grandchildren.”

Her children are now grown and successful, six serve in the Republic of Fiji Military Force, while her youngest son is part of the police force. She said her children are her greatest blessings.

Her son also leases land where they grow tavioka, dalo, and vegetables, supporting both the household and her market stall. She believes in the importance of providing healthy, homegrown food for her family.

Looking back, Mrs Tukai says her faith in God was the foundation that carried her through life’s toughest moments.

“Raising my children was very challenging, but my faith in God helped me endure everything,” she said.

In a fast-moving world, her story stands as a quiet reminder of resilience and purpose. Each day, she continues to set-up her stall, not just to earn a living, but to support those she loves through honest work.

There is no spotlight or grand stage, just determination, faith, and a life built on service.

For Mrs Tukai, providing is not a burden, but a blessing.

And through her daily efforts, that belief continues to keep her going every day.
