At 62 years old, Maria Marama from Lalaji in Navosa has once again taken on the responsibility of raising children after the tragic passing of her daughter-in-law.
Now caring for her grandchildren, Maria continues to support her family with strength and determination despite the emotional and financial challenges they face.
Maria spends close to $600 on groceries during each shopping trip, carefully budgeting to provide food and essentials for the household. Alongside her son and grandchildren, the family relies on income from their yaqona plantation while also growing root crops such as cassava and dalo on their farm to help reduce food expenses.
The sudden loss of her daughter-in-law deeply affected the family, especially her son, but Maria reassured him that she would help care for the children during this difficult period.
Despite her age, she has stepped back into the role of caregiver, managing household duties and supporting her family through grief.
Maria also encourages families to compare supermarket prices carefully and shop wisely to manage the rising cost of living.
