At 62, Maria Marama thought her days of raising children were long behind her. But after tragedy struck her family, the grandmother from Lalaji in Navosa stepped back into the role of caregiver once again, this time for her grandchildren.

What was once meant to be a simple shopping trip quickly became another reminder of the responsibilities she now carries. With quiet strength and determination, Maria continues to support her family following the passing of her daughter-in-law, proving that a mother’s love does not fade with age.

Maria now spends close to $600 on groceries each time she shops, carefully budgeting to ensure there is enough food and essentials for the household. Recently, she even had to make an extra trip to buy snacks and milk for the children.

“I usually spend around $600 on shopping and once our rations finish then we come back to shop,” she said.

Despite the increasing cost of living, Maria says her family is fortunate to have access to fresh produce from their farm. They grow root crops such as cassava and dalo, while their yaqona plantation remains the family’s primary source of income.

“We have a huge yaqona plantation and that is our main source of income for my family,” she shared.

Maria lives with her son and grandchildren, but only a few weeks ago the family was shaken by heartbreak. Her daughter-in-law, who had quietly battled a terminal illness without seeking early medical assistance, passed away after spending just two days in hospital.

The sudden loss left the family devastated, particularly her son, who was struggling to cope with the death of his wife.

Maria said she encouraged him to stay strong and not allow grief to consume him, reassuring him that she would help care for the children during the difficult period ahead.

“With what happened, I told my son not to stress too much because I will help look after the grandchildren,” she said.

Now, at an age when many begin slowing down and enjoying retirement, Maria has once again become the nurturing figure her family desperately needs. From preparing meals to managing shopping expenses and caring for the children, her days are once again filled with the responsibilities of motherhood.

Although life has become more challenging, Maria remains practical when it comes to stretching the family budget. She says she carefully compares prices before making purchases and prefers shopping at RB Patel in Sigatoka because of its affordability and wide range of products.

“For me, I choose RB Patel to shop in because they have the best prices in Sigatoka,” she said.

Her advice to families facing financial pressure is simple, take the time to compare prices and shop wisely.

“When out shopping, spend some time going through the supermarket and comparing prices. Then only you will know where it is best to shop.”

Through grief and hardship, Maria continues to stand tall for her family. Her story is one of sacrifice, resilience and unconditional love, a powerful reminder that even in life’s most painful moments, family remains at the centre of everything.
