Former acting police commissioner Juki Fong has welcomed the passage of the new Police Bill, saying the legislation will better equip officers to deal with modern-day challenges.
Speaking on the Bill that was passed unanimously during the last sitting of Parliament, Mr Fong said the police force needed laws that reflected the realities of a rapidly changing world.
“I think it would be better for the force moving into the future, because as we move into the future there’s a lot of things that we face that is more advanced, so we should have the relevant laws to assist the police in tackling these,” Mr Fong said.
He said law enforcement agencies could not continue to rely solely on legislation drafted for a different era.
“You cannot remain stagnant and be with all the old laws that we had over the years carried that through until now.”
He said the new legislation would help ensure the Fiji Police Force remained effective and responsive as criminal activities and policing demands evolved.
“It’s time to face new challenges with the new laws.”
The Police Bill is expected to modernise the legal framework governing policing in Fiji.
