A married man convicted of stealing items and cash totaling $1000 has had his 14-month jail term suspended for three years.
Ben William Harry pleaded guilty 10 months after charges of burglary and theft were laid against him. The case was presided over presently by High Court judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, who delivered the sentence earlier this month.
Court records show Harry had broken into a Science & Creation store and stole various items and $500 cash on July 7 last year. The owner was alerted via CCTV and the matter was reported.
The 27-year-old accused has two children, however, his 11-month-old daughter died while he was remanded. He missed her funeral.
He also sought forgiveness from the court for his offence.
Justice Tuiqereqere reminded Harry of the repercussions if he were to commit another offence within the three-year suspension period.
Harry was further remanded due to other pending matters in the Magistrate’s Court.
