Three alleged drowning cases were recorded across Fiji over the past week, including the death of a three-year-old child and the recovery of a 68-year-old farmer, while the search continues for a missing 20-year-old diver.
Police said the first case was reported to the Korovou Police Station and involved a three-year-old child who was found floating in a river near Lawaki Village in Tailevu on the afternoon of Friday, July 10. The circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation.
In the second case, divers from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) continued searching waters off Naevuevu Village in Sigatoka for a 20-year-old man who was reported missing on July 10 after he was allegedly swept away by a strong current while diving.
The incident was reported by a 15-year-old who had accompanied the victim. Police said search efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
In the third case, the body of a 68-year-old farmer was recovered from waters off Yadua in Sigatoka on the afternoon of Saturday, July 11, by a joint search team comprising PMF divers and members of the Shangri-La Hydro Sports team.
Police said the man is believed to have drowned after his boat capsized.
