Ra chief and Assistant Minister for Justice, Ratu Josaia Niudami says the protest march by the chiefs and people of Ra yesterday is a sign “democracy exists in Fiji.”
He adds it is not a dangerous signal to the rule of law, as claimed by critics on social media.
“People should join me in commending the chiefs for marshalling their people to their opinion on an issue that speaks to the heart of every citizen,” said Ratu Josaia.
A nation cannot move forward without giving voice to all its communities.”
“I ask critics to understand what true democracy all is about. Quelling the voices of the people will only result in animosity and perpetual distrust.”
Ratu Josaia added those taking part in the march exercised their rights within law.
“We must let the process of constitutional change come to an amicable solution, and while I wholeheartedly support the right to protest, I have advised the people of Ra that it must be peaceful and within reason.”
