Two-time Olympics gold medallist Jerry Tuwai believes nothing is impossible for the Fijian rugby sevens team as they set their sights on securing their third gold medal in France.

Tuwai acknowledges the positive changes that have come about since Osea Kolinisau took over as head coach, emphasising that this transformation does not diminish the impact of former coach Ben Gollings whom he recognises as a good coach and a good man.

Reflecting on their performance at the Madrid 7s tournament, Tuwai notes the noticeable improvements in their gameplay.

“A lot of changes we can see in the team, we have been working on our game plan and I’m happy to see the Fijian style of play come back,” said Tuwai.

“Our teamwork and decision-making on the field have been on point, and we’re feeling good about it.”

Despite not being part of the team for some recent tournaments, Tuwai expresses confidence in their current form.

“Even though I missed a few tournaments, I’ve stayed connected with the team, they kept encouraging me to come back and play, and I kept telling them that I’d be back.

“This will be my third Olympic Games and I truly believe that we have a fantastic squad, a strong team, and great management, the bond we share as a team gives me confidence that we can shine when it really counts.”

Tuwai acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead in the pursuit of Olympics glory.

“We have a lot of respect for all the teams we’ll be facing, especially New Zealand, they have been fighting for this tournament for so long.

“They’re tough competitors who have been working hard for this tournament, anything can happen in a tournament, so we’re taking it one day at a time and staying focused on our game plan.”

The men’s team will play Uruguay at 3.30am on Thursday followed by USA at 6.30am then France at 1.30am on Friday.
