THE new South Pacific Link is the latest service brand to NYK as they increase their presence in Fiji and the Pacific Islands with direct dedicated service from Taiwan Korea and Japan to Fiji.
The service, which kicks off this week with the arrival of the South Islander V101, links South East Asia and China mainland cargo hub through two of the world’s large container ports of Busan in Korea and Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Fiji.
The link brings with it to Fiji employing 4 NK class vessels namely Pacific, South, Coral and Tropical Islander with features for containerised, break bulk and ro-ro deck for motor vehicle
NYK Bulk & Projects has its roots dating back to 1885, while it established the first long distance liner service on the Bombay route in 1893.
The operating vessel numbers under NYK to date is 900 vessels, putting NYK as the top vessel operator in the world from cruise ships, car carrier, containership, semi container ship, bulk vessels of all types for dry, petroleum and LNG to name a few, whilst Danish Line Maersk is the leader in carriage of cargo containers worldwide NYK leads in carriage of all types of cargo under their fleet of 900 vessels
NYK is no stranger to Fiji. Their bulk woodchips and sugar vessel have been a regular visitor to the port of Lautoka chartered by cargo owners for bulk loading of wood and sugar that goes to buyers in Asia and Europe.
The main cargo is automobile from Korea of brand new Kia and Hyundai while cargo from Japan comprise brand new Toyota, Ford, Isuzu, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi and used Japanese vehicles which will be delivered at the ports of Lautoka and Suva.
Containerised general cargo include frozen bait from Asia for many foreign fishing vessel use, which will be delivered at Suva port which is the receiving point for fishing bait needs and break bulk cargo.
The outbound leg following average port stay of 24 hours in Fiji will involve full laden cargo of Fiji-made products for customers in Samoa , American Samoa, Tahiti, Noumea, Vanuatu Solomon Islands and then onwards to Taiwan, Korea and Japan with frozen fish shipped in minus 35-40 degrees boxes mainly of frozen tuna and other species of fish, timber, scrap metal and general dry cargoes
All in all this new South Pacific Link Service plays pivotal role in service enhancement South bound and North bound to and from Asia with a competitive edge offering reliability workable freight rates for importers and exporters of Fiji and for Fiji to position itself as the transship hub for the Pacific island countries.
