Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School students now look up to Faiaz Ali and Disha Chand to lead them this year.
The two were inducted as the school’s head boy and head girl last week alongside 181 prefects.
Both Ali and Chand have held leadership roles over the years and are well aware of the challenges associated with the roles bestowed upon them.
They were assistant heads in Year 11 and deputy heads in Year 12 before being selected as the school heads this year.
Faiaz Ali, who is from Rewa with maternal links to Lau, said he was happy with what he was able to achieve.
“The sky is the limit – that has always been my aim in life,” he said.
“I feel that all the training, the guidance and mistakes learned over the years has helped me greatly.
“We are not perfect, and we’re bound to make mistakes at times but being able to humble yourself and recognise your mistakes is important when being a leader.
“Working with the other prefects, the students and teachers — we can strive and achieve something better for our school.”
As the school head boy, he hopes to help in the area of discipline at the school.
“I would also like my friends and students to know that I’m here to help them out in whatever way I can.
“I’m grateful for my teachers and my parents’ support over the years.”
Disha Chand of Narere was overwhelmed and excited to be the school’s head girl.
“I’m looking forward to it, especially in helping students and teachers,” she said.
“It’s going to be a challenge, especially now that I’m in Year 13.
There is a lot of work to do and I will have to maintain good leadership as well.
“I will do my best to balance out my new role with academic achievements so that I can set a good example to the other students.”
She dedicates her achievement to her mum who has been supporting her throughout her educational journey.
The school elected ‘year captains’, library assistants, student council representatives, senior prefects, sports prefects, student council executives, assistant heads and deputy heads during the induction ceremony.
The school also had their 2023 prize-giving ceremony on the same day.
Head boy Faiaz Ali managed to secure first place in Year 12-05 while the head girl, Disha Chand managed second place in Year 12-01.
They were awarded alongside 47 other awardees.
