THE Fiji Times sincerely apologises for an error in our reporting regarding comments made by Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General Hon Siromi Turaga on the timing of the next general election.

While efforts were made to correctly transcribe the Minister’s remarks, an error occurred in the transcription and subsequent reporting of his comments during an interview on Wednesday this week.

While speaking, Mr Turaga said Government was working towards an election timeline “around December to ….., yeah”.

The transcript incorrectly translated the “December to…” as  “December 2”.

When the Leader of the Opposition’s office issued a statement yesterday questioning the A-G for announcing the “election date”, a senior The Fiji Times staff replied to this email and informed the Opposition media liaison officer that the mistake was made by the newspaper – not the A-G.

Despite being informed of the error, the Opposition office released the statement publicly on their Facebook page this morning.

The Fiji Times deeply regrets the error and any confusion or inconvenience it may have caused the Minister, the Prime Minister, the Electoral Management Board, Members of Parliament and the public.

We have taken steps to correct the record in our print and online editions.

We reaffirm our commitment to accuracy, fairness and credibility in our reporting.
