Bati and Bulikula urged to carry Fiji’s pride, resilience and spirit at the World Cup

Many are called, but a few are chosen.

That was the powerful message from Minister for Youth and Sport Jese Saukuru to Fiji’s Bati and Bulikula as they prepare to carry the nation’s hopes at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

Speaking at the teams’ itatau ceremony at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Saukuru reminded the players that they were among the privileged few chosen to represent Fiji on the world stage.

He challenged them to rise to the occasion and showcase the resilience of a nation that has never been afraid of a challenge.

“I want you to remember that Fiji has never been a nation that shies away from challenges,” he said.

“We may be a small island nation in terms of landmass, but we have always demonstrated that we can stand tall on the world stage.”

Saukuru said the opportunity was about more than national honour or creating rugby league history.

The players, he said, also had the chance to inspire Fiji’s younger generation through the way they performed and conducted themselves.

He called on every member of the teams to play with passion, pride, discipline and respect.

“But as you represent Fiji on the field, remember that you are also ambassadors of our nation off the field,” he reminded the team.

“Conduct yourselves with humility, respect and dignity. Let the world see not only the strength and skill of the Fiji Bati, but also the warmth, humility and spirit of the Fijian people.”

The Bati and Bulikula will leave for Australia on Sunday, carrying with them more than the expectations of a rugby league nation.

They will carry the name of Fiji.
