Test for 13 sirens

All 13 tsunami sirens along the Suva-Lami corridor were activated as part of a live siren test yesterday.

According to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), the live siren test was part of Government’s continued commitment towards improving its state of readiness for any tsunami event.

The NDMO said the exercise was to also test the functionality of the sirens.

Thirteen sirens are installed along the Suva foreshore, and they have an acoustic range of 1.2 kilometres.

These locations are: Water Authority of Fiji (Kinoya Sewerage Plant), FINTEL Vatuwaqa, RFMF Officers Training School Vatuwaqa, USP Statham, USP lower campus, USP main campus, Veiuto Primary School, Government Training Centre Nasese, iTaukei Trust Fund Board, SCC Civic car park rooftop, Biosecurity Renown St — Suva Central, Government Shipping Services Walu Bay, and Lami Town.

Members of the public were also advised that evacuation was not necessary as part of the exercise.

Meanwhile, over the duration of May, the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) issued 22 notices of earthquakes, out of which six were recorded in Ra.

Five of these were recorded at varying distances from May 23 to 24– northeast from Navolau 1 in Rakiraki, and the other occurred 42km northwest from Navolau 1 on May 26.

Two earthquakes occurred in the Lau Group on May 24, one captured 395km south from Doi Village, Ono-i-Lau and the other 61km north northeast from Naroi Village, Moala, Lau.
