EXCITEMENT is growing among the Fiji AFL men’s team as they prepare for the 2024 Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia.
The team received their official jerseys and training wear in a ceremony at Albert Park in Suva yesterday, a moment vice-chair of AFL Fiji, Saula Tuilevuka, described as “a boost” for the players as they head into the international competition.
“These jerseys mean a lot to the boys,” Tuilevuka said.
“They come from different backgrounds, many from villages and settlements, and this is a chance for AFL Fiji to help mould them.”
The team has been training daily over the past seven weeks, combining experienced players, graduates from the AFL development pathways, and new faces.
Head coach Alipate Navuso, shared that the team is a mix of talent and dedication, with eight experienced players who have represented Fiji in past tournaments, nine players promoted from U14 to U17 pathways, and eleven new players eager to make their mark.
Despite AFL being a minor sport in Fiji, the team has shown great commitment.
Players have been paying for their own travel and food during training, with families stepping in to offer support.
“These boys’ families have been amazing. They’ve made sacrifices so their sons can focus on their training, and we’re grateful to have that support,” Tuilevuka said.
The Fiji AFL men’s side has set an ambitious goal to bring home the Pacific Cup.
“We’ve trained hard, and the commitment we’ve seen over the past seven weeks shows we’re ready to take on this challenge,” said Navuso.
The Pacific Cup will be held in Brisbane, Australia, starting November 14.
