Fiji AFL men’s team is all set to face tough competition in the upcoming 2024 Pacific Cup, held on the Sunshine Coast in Australia tomorrow until the 24th of this month.
With an energized squad and weeks of focused training, Fiji is eager to take on the best teams in the Pacific, including formidable opponents like Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand.
Led by team captain Isimeli Naqaravatu Qiolevu, the team has been training rigorously in preparation for their opening match against PNG, followed by their second game against New Zealand.
Qiolevu expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.
“The training was alright, and the boys are really looking forward to it. Preparation was alright, and we put our focus on our first game against PNG,” he said.
In a tournament where speed, discipline, and teamwork are crucial, the Fiji team is committed to maintaining focus and faith on the field.
Qiolevu highlighted the importance of unity and trust among the players. “Just keep our heads up, have faith in God, and let God do the rest for us,” he shared.
The Fiji squad is a young one, with most players under the age of 29.
The youngest, an 18-year-old head boy from Marist Brothers High School, exemplifies the youth and potential of the team.
This year’s Pacific Cup is not only a battle for regional supremacy but also a critical preparation for the AFL International Cup, a global event set for next year.
