FIJI Teachers Union Suva was crowned overall champion of the Fiji Teachers Union Southern Zone sports meet last week.
The tournament was held at Vashisht Muni Primary School, Navua.
A historic win for the teachers from Suva by taking all the trophies back to the capital city.
FTU Suva beat FTU Navua in netball and volleyball and recorded a come-from-behind victory against FTU Nasinu for the football title.
National president of Fiji Teachers Union Muniappa Goundar stressed how important it was for members of the education sector to keep healthy.
“Sports is important in keeping teachers fit and healthy,” he said.
“Regular exercise and physical activities are a must to curb the rising deaths from non-communicable diseases.
“It is also important for the union to work in harmony and for members to remain united.”
Last year, FTU Suva won the football, netball and men’s volleyball titles when the tournament was held at Rishikul College, Nasinu.
It was a proud moment for FTU chairperson Rajnesh Lingham who has been at the helm of FTU Suva since 2008.
“We thank FTU headquarters for their financial assistance to run the sports meet and executives and players from participating unions,” said Lingham.
“And we also thank the sponsors Jitesh Patel of Suva Bargain, Andrew Kumar of Vodafone and Rohit Lingam of Frisco Rentals.”
