TEACHERS in rural areas should be given the same opportunities as those in urban schools, says Navosa Central College acting principal Aseri Uluinavucu.

“There are a lot of teachers who have been working in rural schools for more than 10 years and they have not received any promotion or an opportunity to move to an urban school or near their families,” Mr Uluinavucu said.

“We also need all students studying to become teachers to sign an undertaking that they will go to any school irrespective of where the school is.”

Mr Uluinavucu said this would also allow teachers who have been serving for years in rural schools to move closer to their family members.

“The students are suffering. Until now we have yet to get a teacher for commerce since the beginning of this year. While that is an issue for the ministry to handle, it could have been solved if there were more teachers coming to the rural areas.”
