THERE is currently no remaining balance in its 2026 teacher shortage exercise after 414 appointment letters were issued and signed for primary and secondary schools.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro shared this in Parliament last week after Opposition MP Hem Chand raised the issue of teacher shortage, pushing the minister to inform the House of the specific subject areas where there was a shortage of teachers and how the ministry was addressing the issue.

According Mr Radrodro there were 141 primary teacher positions listed under the shortage exercise, with five submissions approved and 175 letters issued and signed.

“For secondary schools, the ministry listed 219 positions, with 10 submissions approved and 239 letters issued and signed,” Mr Radrodro said.

“A total of 414 letters issued and signed across primary and secondary schools, with the balance recorded as zero.”
