Taveuni Rugby is just one win away from making history by securing their first promotion to the Skipper Cup when they take on Macuata Rugby Union in a crucial Northern Rally clash this weekend.
Taveuni Rugby Union president Aloesi Rasaciva said the team had a solid week of preparation after opting to rest last weekend, giving the players much-needed recovery time ahead of what he called their biggest match of the season.
“Our final preparation has been good,” Rasaciva said. “We decided to rest this week to allow more recovery time for the players. We have treated every match in this Northern Rally as our final.”
He said the team’s focus was on improving ball carries into contact while maintaining continuity, defensive structure, and phase play.
“We’ve told the boys to do the little things right first, stick to the game plan and the win will come.”
A win will see Taveuni secure a spot in the Skipper Cup for the first time — a feat Rasaciva said would bring added responsibility.
“It will mean more hard work for the players and the executive to maintain our position in the Skipper competition.”
He acknowledged Macuata’s experience in the Skipper Cup and said the team would not take them lightly.
“We respect Macuata because they have been playing in the Skipper competition for many years. But nothing is impossible. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Rasaciva credited the strong support from the people of Taveuni, local clubs, and loyal fans for the team’s success.
“Our support this year has been tremendous. Supporters are chartering the Suncity Ferry on Saturday morning to travel over, watch the game and return home the same day.”
He said the chance to earn promotion had motivated everyone involved with the team.
“The opportunity to play in the Skipper Cup has motivated the players, management and the executive to give their very best.”
With weeks of preparation behind them, Rasaciva said Taveuni was ready.
“The team is highly prepared for this game mentally, physically and spiritually.”
A win on Saturday will see Taveuni make history by joining Fiji Rugby’s premier provincial competition for the first time.
