A national Taskforce to Address Pornography is working to combat online child sexual exploitation in Fiji.
Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica told Parliament the taskforce had prioritised children’s safety online and backed police efforts to establish an Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Unit.
UNICEF, with Australian Government support, has completed a mapping study on Fiji’s current response.
A study mission to Australia is also planned to learn from recent reforms there.
“Disturbingly, materials depicting the sexual abuse of children are on the rise,” Mr Kamikamica said.
He urged for the adoption of the internationally recognised term Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (CSEAM) instead of child pornography.
“The term child pornography minimises the focus on its long-lasting impact on children,” he said.
Mr Kamikamica made the comments while delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday on ‘Strengthening Telecommunications and Online Safety Laws, and Progress on the Work of the National Taskforces’.
