THE Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission will look into political upheavals starting from 1987, according to chairperson Marcus Brand.
For the next 18 months, Mr Brand said survivors of the political upheavals would have the opportunity to share their stories.
“Our focus is to give a comfortable and safe space to survivors of the past political upheavals, starting in 1987,” he said.
While the events were nearly 40 years old, he said they remained a painful memory for many.
“Even the people who actually, physically experienced those events, it’s not a fresh memory, but they go almost 40 years back.”
The commission, which officially began in February, has spent the first few months preparing.
Mr Brand said they were now fully operational with members of the public reaching out to the commission.
