A SMART tactical switch by Bula FC proved decisive as they upset competition leaders Auckland FC in Ba during the final match of round five with a 2-1 victory at the weekend.
Coach Stephane Auvray’s plan centred on tightening control in midfield and implementing a high-pressure strategy that unsettled the top-ranked side’s rhythm.
The disciplined approach frustrated Auckland’s attack and led to crucial defensive errors.
Ivan Kumar, Bula FC’s left-back who entered the game in the 70th minute, stressed the importance of mindset on game day.
“We knew they were on top of the table, but it doesn’t make any difference if you are at the top or the bottom — it’s all about the game day,” Kumar said.
“The mindset had to be right, about who really wanted that win.”
Midfield was a key focus for Auvray’s side.
“Midfield was one of the places where we needed to work.
“We did some training around that because we knew we needed to close the midfield first — and that’s how we got it right,” Kumar said.
The high-pressure tactic proved effective.
“From watching other teams, we saw that high press was where Auckland struggled,” Kumar added. “That’s where their defence can make mistakes, and that’s what led to our second goal.”
The win marks a significant boost for Bula FC, who have climbed into the top four after a challenging start to the season.
“It wasn’t an easy run, but we kept working, and now we’ve managed to get into the top four where we want to be,” Kumar said. He also highlighted the team’s resilience after their previous loss.
“The boys didn’t drop their heads after South Melbourne. We knew this game could change a lot for us — and we gave everything.”
Looking ahead, Kumar says the team is focused on continuous improvement as they prepare for upcoming fixtures in New Zealand.
“It’s all about learning every game. We’ll keep working on fitness and fixing the small things,” he said.
With solid tactics and renewed confidence, Bula FC looks set to remain a formidable force as the competition intensifies.
