The People’s Alliance Party’s disciplinary committee has 21 days to decide and report back to party executives of its decision on whether MP Lynda Tabuya will remain a member.
Following a meeting of party executives yesterday afternoon, PAP general secretary Sila Balawa told the media that Ms Tabuya would be allowed to explain her side of the story.
“We want to hear all sides of the story, give it very serious consideration, and after serious consideration and thorough investigation, then hopefully the disciplinary committee will arrive at a report to be considered by the executive committee,” Mr Balawa said.
“We cannot go any further than that because they would sort of jeopardise the integrity of the whole process.
“In this meeting, all the party executives came, and they were here to be updated and to discuss Ms Tabuya’s case.
“All I can tell you right now is that the disciplinary committee is going ahead with their work according to the party constitution.
“As you would understand that work is to be independent, so we will be protecting the terms and privacy of the whole process.
“We’d like to be given time to do it and do it properly.
“According to the constitution, they have 21 days to do their work and report back to the People’s Alliance management committee.”
Mr Balawa said the disciplinary committee needed freedom and the privacy to conduct their work with fairness and integrity without any interference from anyone.
He also confirmed that Ms Tabuya wasn’t in the meeting and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka participated via zoom.
Mr Balawa did not reveal the identity of other attendees yesterday.
He said Mr Rabuka has acted in his capacity as a Prime Minister and the party would do its part.
