A FLYING header from Samuela Drudru was enough to propel Suva to the top of the National League points table.
The lone goal scored in the 30th minute of play helped Suva extend their winning streak to three games from as many matches and gave Rewa their first defeat of the season.
Suva now leads the Fiji Sun/Skipper Tuna National Football League with nine points thanks to their 1-0 win at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.
Rewa has six points from three games and is tied for second place with Labasa who beat Lautoka 2-1 yesterday at Churchill Park.
Neighbours Suva and Rewa came into the match unbeaten and it seemed like the match would keep fans at the edge of their seats.
But it was not to be as both teams thwarted each other’s attacking attempts and prevented shots from being taken within the 18-yard box.
Every long range attempt either sailed way past the goal or over the goalmouth.
But with a bit of luck, a cross kick found an unmarked Drudru who was always ready to pounce on the ball and this time he just put his head up and the ball glanced off his head and into the back of the net.
Suva coach Gurjeet Singh was delighted with the win but admitted his side could have scored more goals.
“The three points was important and one goal was enough for it but we have more chances from which we could have scored,” he said.
“We knew Rewa was going to be tough so in the second half we had to defend well and turn defence into attack.”
Rewa soccer coach Marika Rodu was disappointed with how his side performed in the match.
He said they could have scored had referee Finau Vulivuli given them a penalty in the second half.
“From what we saw, the ball did go the hand of the Suva player and it should have been a penalty,” he said.
“Apart from that it was our players who failed to keep the ball and use it.
“They were too impatient and were under pressure to score.
“Had the players kept the ball at their feet and were more composed, we could have scored goals.”
