Suspicious parcel containing white substance found on Lau Island

A parcel containing a white substance was discovered on an island in the Lau Group on Saturday, May 30, prompting an investigation by police.

According to the Fiji Police Force, the package was found by a woman and her daughter after they returned from a fishing trip.

The parcel has since been collected and is now in police custody. 

Authorities say the substance has yet to be tested and investigations are continuing to determine its nature.

Police have acknowledged the quick reporting of the discovery and thanked community leaders for their continued support in sharing information with law enforcement.

The Fiji Police Force is reminding members of the public not to handle suspicious packages and to immediately contact their nearest police station, police post, or call 1681 to report any such discoveries.

Members of the public are also encouraged to report suspicious maritime activities through the Pacific Watch platform at pacificwatch.org.

Police say public vigilance remains crucial as investigations continue.
