The suspect held in Police custody in relation to the Samabula Shiv Temple alleged sacrilege is from a settlement located in Lami.
The Fiji Times sources confirm he is 39 years old and investigators are in the process of ascertaining his mental status before laying charges.
He was arrested at the temple yesterday afternoon soon after committing the act of sacrilege.
Meanwhile, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji commended the Fiji Police Force for promptly arresting the alleged perpetrator.
Sabha president Arun Prasad urged the Police to conduct a thorough investigation and pursue the strongest legal action under the law.
“Such actions are not only criminal in nature but also an attack on the fundamental principles of religious freedom, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence that form the foundation of our multicultural society,” he said.
“The Sabha stands in full solidarity with the Sanatan Dharam community during this difficult time.”
