A decision on Energy Fiji Ltd’s proposed 11-cent electricity surcharge is expected this week, with the outcome likely to impact thousands of consumers and businesses across the country.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission had earlier confirmed that it had substantially completed its assessment and regulatory deliberations on the interim fuel surcharge application submitted by EFL.

EFL is seeking an adjustment of approximately 11 cents per kilowatt hour due to rising fuel-related electricity generation costs driven by volatility in international fuel markets and broader geopolitical pressures affecting global energy supply chains.

As part of its review process, the commission conducted consultations with key government stakeholders, consumer advocacy organisations, and private sector representatives.

These included the Consumer Council of Fiji, Fiji Council of Social Services, and the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation.

Discussions focused on the potential impact the surcharge could have on household budgets, business operating costs, and the wider economy.

The commission said all concerns and submissions raised during the consultation process had been carefully considered.

It added that its assessment aimed to strike a balance between consumer affordability, business sustainability, and maintaining reliable electricity supply services nationwide.

It also stressed that its decision-making process remained transparent, evidence-based, and guided by the broader public interest.
