Supermarket cashiers

WE always expect while shopping to be served by an efficient, fast and a polite cashier so that we can get out of the queue and head for home or do other things.

One needs to think about the condition in which these cashiers operate in and the long working hours that they have to endure.

Some work daily from 8am until the supermarkets close very late for six straight days in a standing position.

Their employers probably insist that their performance and the productivity are better when not seated.

Apart from the few breaks there is no other rest period or comforts that are enjoyed by the cashiers.

For job security and fear of victimisation this issue is probably never brought to the attention of the supervisors.

The prolonged standing at one spot can have side effects on one’s health and probably the negative aspects will be noticed some years later.

By then the staff who suffers from the effects might no longer be in employment.

I believe there is no mechanism in place in Fiji to monitor this hazard for compensation purposes.

The long hours of standing at a workplace can be harmful to the health and the most noticeable of the many signs are slouching which is improper posture, veins that have become enlarged and twisted and joint compression which puts a lot of pressure and weight on the knees.

It is also a problem for women who are pregnant.

I believe the laws state that when a task that can be efficiently done while seated an ergonomically designed suitable seating shall be provided for the worker.

For any work which is required to be done while standing, a seat needs to be provided to the worker to take advantage of any sitting opportunities that may arise during the course of the work.

If the work cannot be performed while seated but it is possible from time to time to sit, a seat shall be available for the use of the worker when performing that task during the period when sitting is possible.

I believe the employer has a duty of care for his workers and must consider this harsh reality.

The Ministry of Labour who have expertise in this area should enlighten us more on the issues raised.
