Sugar production in Fiji has declined significantly in the 2024 season, with a drop of 1.33 million tonnes compared with the previous year, said Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh.

He attributed the decline to ongoing industry challenges compounded by the effects of climate change, which had adversely impacted both farmers and harvesters.

“This is a significant decline in the state of our cane,” Mr Singh said.

He said the Sugar Industry Tribunal had earlier announced the termination of the crushing process at Fiji’s three mills due to operational throughput and the estimated crop available.

“We tried to extend the mill crushing period, but the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) explained that it is very expensive to run the mills. In consultation with the Government, the operations were ceased,” he said.

During the parliamentary session, MP Viam Pillay questioned whether cane farmers had been compensated for unharvested cane caused by the early closure of the mills.

In response, Mr Singh clarified the mills were not closed prematurely but extended for several days to maximise production.

He said the ministry had been providing consistent support to farmers throughout the season and had introduced initiatives to boost production for 2025.

“We have implemented 18 different programs for farmers and encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities to increase production next year,” he said.

To address unharvested cane, the ministry has allocated $80,000 in compensation.

“I believe the farmers understand that we have done our best, and they will be prioritised for harvesting when the next season begins.”

He acknowledged the high operational costs of extending mill operations, noting that inefficiencies in the current factory system remained a significant challenge.

“This is a minimal compensation that can be given to farmers for the leftover cane,” he said.
