As their cupboards run out of supplies, Year 10 student Senivalati Tuinabewa and his siblings have turned to sell brooms to make money in order to buy much-needed food.
The Pundit Shreedhar Maharaj College student in Wainibokasi said together with his seven siblings they decided to sell sasa brooms to assist their parents who have been laid off from work as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
“It took me and my siblings two days to make these 13 brooms, so I volunteered to sell it for $5 as we have nothing to do at home these days,” said Tuinabewa.
“I have seven siblings and we live at Draubuta Village with our parents.
“My father is a digger operator at one company, so he is staying at home as their business is closed and my mother stays at home.
“Since we have been running out of much-needed supplies at home, we decided with my siblings to do things to help our parents earn some money for our family.”
Tuinabewa said the returns from his brooms would be used to buy groceries for their family this weekend.
“Then we will see what the new week brings us and what we can do to help our parents.”
