MOST of the stray dogs in Lautoka have owners, says animal welfare advocate Kamni Narayan.
Speaking to The Fiji Times during a dog spaying and neutering program organised by Animals Fiji in the Sugar City yesterday, she said it was the responsibility of every pet owner to ensure their animals were taken care of.
“And this means getting them spayed or neutered because this reduces the number of dogs that give birth and as a result the stray population will also come down,” she said.
Ms Narayan, who hosts an animal welfare page on Facebook called Sai Sai, said it was also important that animal owners kept their pets within the confines of their compound.
“This is where each person must take responsibility for their dog so that it does not pose a threat to people walking on the street and also it does not have the opportunity to go out during the mating season.”
Ms Narayan believes that by conducting a trap, spay and release program, the stray dog issue in Lautoka could be addressed.
Animals Fiji holds a veterinary clinic at the old Lautoka Police Station every Sunday.
