The second Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) meeting took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, recently to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy in the Pacific region.
The IPPP is a strategic initiative designed to improve communication and collaboration between the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia and the parliaments of Pacific countries, particularly in several high-priority areas like trade, investment, economy, and maritime and land-sea connectivity.
Considering that Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous nation, the third-largest democracy, and our Pacific neighbour, I believe this is a great opportunity for capacity building in Fiji (and the Pacific) with a development partner who shares similar values with Fiji in terms of their drive to modernise while still retaining their cultural identity.
There is much we can learn from Indonesia, and they are essentially volunteering to bring parliament members together to work more closely and effectively.
Using Indonesia’s template, which has enabled them to take their economy to incredible heights, Fiji can find practical solutions to make it easier for countries in the region to connect and work together.
With a key focus on supporting growth that benefits everyone and is environmentally friendly,.
The 2nd IPPP session was attended by parliamentary leaders and members from 12 countries, one territory, and one international organization.
According to the organisers, “the primary objectives of the second IPPP meeting include reconnecting and strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation, exploring tangible outcomes to enhance regional connectivity, and promoting sustainable and inclusive development. Through regular meetings and dialogues, such as the second IPPP meeting, parliamentarians from participating countries engage in discussions on critical issues like climate change, economic development, and cultural exchange.
“Ultimately, the IPPP aspires to build a more connected and prosperous Pacific region where collaborative efforts and shared values drive progress and stability for all member nations. The continuity from the first to the second IPPP meeting underscores a growing commitment to address regional challenges collectively and to harness the potential of the Pacific Ocean for the benefit of all its bordering nations.”
Essentially, it’s about bringing parliament members from around the world together to work more closely and effectively.
What strikes me most about this is the fact that Indonesia is merely acting as an intermediary between Pacific island leaders, providing a space for them to discuss and collaborate on ways in which each can enhance their policies.
This is, quite frankly, very refreshing to see.
My love for Indonesia is no secret. They are in my opinion a hidden gem of a development partner that heralds greater opportunities for Fiji.
But seeing a development partner involved in Pacific leadership without any strings attached is refreshing.
Their genuine commitment to fostering regional cooperation and development, without pushing their agenda, sets a remarkable precedent for other nations.
Indonesia feels to me like a true partnership, where mutual respect and shared goals take precedence over self-interest.
