Sugar Minister Tomasi Tunabuna has called on politicians to support practical solutions that help farmers earn more rather than politicising the sugarcane sector.
He said farmers should not be used for political debate ahead of the general election.
“Instead, politicians should encourage farmers to diversify their crops so they can earn better incomes,” said Mr Tunabuna.
He said relying only on sugar cane is not sustainable because production costs are high while returns remain low.
“We cannot continue relying solely on products that have lower market value and higher production costs. That does not make economic sense,” he said.
He said farmers can continue planting sugar cane, but should also grow other crops at the same time to improve their total income.
“We can maintain our existing production while also introducing commodities that cost less to produce and generate better returns.”
The Sugar Minister said this approach would help farmers manage rising costs and increase their overall earnings.
“This only can offset the difference and improve overall farm income.”
He said the Government had long advised farmers to look at diversification as a way to strengthen their livelihoods.
He said political focus on cost pressures alone does not help the sector, and solutions should instead be practical and income-driven.
