AN unemployed man accused of raping his wife — a police officer — has been ordered to not contact his two children aged 10 and 12 while on bail.

State lawyer Zenith Zunaid informed High Court judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu on May 22 the two children were State witnesses.

The 35-year-old is alleged to have had forceful unconsented sexual intercourse with his 43-year-old wife while their children were present at home on July 15 two years ago.

He was granted bail with two sureties the same day since Mr Zunaid confirmed conducting thorough surety checks.

He said the previous sureties submitted by lawyer Tobia Ravuniwa were inadequate because one of them had a pending court matter.

Justice Bulamainaivalu told the sureties of their duties to the court and the repercussions if the accused failed to adhere to court conditions.

The man has been ordered to reside with his surety in Tailevu and to report weekly to the Wainibokasi Police Station.

The case has been adjourned to June 12.
