GOVERNMENT’S proposal for amendments to two important pieces of legislation in the sugarcane industry in Parliament yesterday drew heavy criticism from the Opposition and growers representative organisations.
Speaking in Parliament, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum (pictured) moved that amendments be made to the Sugar Cane Growers Fund Act and Sugar Industry Act to reflect changes already effected since 2009.
He said the Sugarcane Growers Fund amendment Bill proposed that the Sugar Minister appoint the members of the board and its chairperson. The A-G said proposed changes to the Sugar Industry Act under the Sugarcane Industry Amendment Bill 2015 would ensure growers were given representation in the Sugar Cane Growers Council and a voice in the industry.
