Ba Hospital boasts one of the country’s state-of-the-art operating theatre equipped with high tech machines to make surgery much easier for both the medical team and the patient.

With the first surgeries underway this week, Aspen Medical has revealed that the fully equipped operating theatre will ensure Fijians get the best surgical services in the country.

Aspen Medical – Health Care Fiji Pet Ltd chief operations officer Barry Herberts said one of the features of the new operating theatres were the Australian Medical certified gas system installed for surgeries.

“So we’ve got medical gas oxygen, medical air and also suction in pendants, but more importantly, the other thing that we’ve added into these theatres is what’s called an anaesthetic gas scavenging system,” he said.

“So when you go and have a surgical procedure, the doctors and the anaesthetist issues what are called inhalation agents to put you to sleep as well as IV medications.

“The problem with that is when you breathe those in and you breathe out some escapes into the environment.

“So what we need to make sure is basically that our clinical people aren’t breathing those inhalation gases in. So we’ve had to set up an anaesthetic gas scavenging system into these theatres, which wasn’t there previously.

“So that’s a brand new thing that we put into those theatres.”

He said the theatres were also equipped with a state-of-the-art anaesthetic gas machine found in the global market. “They’re a mechanical ventilator that breathes for the patient while you’re having a surgical procedure.

“Now, historically, these machines have come on in leaps and bounds over the years and the ones that we’ve got at Ba are the newest generation gas machine that we got from the market.

“We’ve also got a state-of-the-art surgical operating table which can get the patient’s into a wide range of positions needed so the surgeon can basically work and do their job comfortably and it also it maximises the patient’s position for that particular procedure. So that’s quite a big thing for us.”
