Aliana Vakalolom is a player to look out for in the future.

At just 15 years old, on Sunday when the Digicel Fiji Young Kulas took on the Costa Rican U20 Women’s team, one name stood out above the rest — Aliana Vakaloloma.

Though the final scoreline read 2-0 in favour of Costa Rica, the game was a showcase of exceptional goalkeeping from the youngest member of the Fijian squad.

Vakaloloma, who only joined the team two weeks prior, delivered a performance that left a lasting impression on both her teammates and the coaching staff.

Coach Chua said she was very impressed by Vakaloloma.

“We only met her two weeks ago on our US tour so I think she is our key player.”

Vakaloloma faced one of the toughest challenges of her budding career.

Costa Rica, known for their aggressive and fast-paced attacking play, unleashed a barrage of shots on goal throughout the match, however, the young goalkeeper with paternal links to Buca Village, in Cakaudrove lass stood tall between the posts, repeatedly denying the opposition with a series of outstanding saves.

Her agility, reflexes, and composure under pressure were on full display, earning her praise from the coaching staff despite the team’s defeat.

Reflecting on her journey, Vakaloloma shared, “From a very young age, I have always followed in my older brothers’ footsteps”.

“They started playing soccer at age four, so I automatically wanted to join as soon as I could too.

“I tried various sports growing up and once played four at one time, but soccer stuck with me. My dad wanted me to play rugby, but it wasn’t really available where we live.”

That determination to pursue her passion has paid off in a big way.

Vakaloloma currently plays year-round for the Spokane Shadow 08 Girls Academy, where she has honed her skills and developed into a formidable goalkeeper.

Her recent call up to the Digicel Fiji Young Kulas marks a significant milestone in her young career.

“It is a great privilege and honor for Aliana to represent Fiji. Her mother and I are so proud of her and excited that she has the opportunity to be a part of this historic team,” said her father, Ratu Isimeli Naisoso Vakaloloma, who moved to the US in 1994 at the age of 13.

For Vakaloloma, the opportunity to represent Fiji at such a young age is not just a dream come true but also a stepping stone toward greater heights.

“Being given the opportunity to represent Fiji at such a young age is an incredible honour,” she said.

“This opportunity provides me with experiences that will help both my personal and athletic growth.

“It is truly a dream come true to be able to play at this level, and I am proud to represent this country.”
