Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has carried out an assessment on soil erosion and post-flood outbreaks of pests and diseases in sugar cane farms.
Numerous sugar cane areas were flooded recently due to heavy rain.
“Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks,” said SRIF CEO, Dr Vinesh Kumar.
He said the SRIF teams in the West and North have gathered data on crop losses, soil conditions, and any immediate measures needed to mitigate further damage.
Dr. Vinesh added the teams also collected soil and plant samples to monitor potential outbreaks of pests and diseases, which often follow flooding.
“We are committed to providing the necessary support and guidance to farmers throughout this challenging period.”
SRIF is also conducting field verifications for farmers who have applied for the Ratoon Management Grant.
“It is crucial that the support reaches those most affected, and we’re working hard to make sure the aid is distributed efficiently.
