The remote and picturesque islands of Yasawa has witnessed the potential of a new era for sports tourism in Fiji.
Last month, the Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s, a Fiji Sports Council initiative, brought together talented local rugby teams, enthusiastic villagers, and curious tourists from nearby resorts including Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, Coral view Island Resort, Turtle Island Resort, and homestays throughout Nacula.
For two days, the heart of the Yasawa Islands pulsed with energy, culture, and competition a living showcase of how sport can create meaningful economic and social impact in rural communities.
Fiji Sports Council acting chief executive Gilbert Vakalalabure says we saw tourists catching up the boat from their beachfront bures to the rugby ground, mingling with locals, cheering for teams, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was authentic, emotional, and exciting.
“This is the kind of experience that stays with people — and it’s something you can’t package in a brochure.”
He adds the local residents also felt the positive ripple effects.
Homestays and small shops recorded an increase in visitors, resort operators noted heightened interest in village life and Fijian rugby culture, and many tourists stayed longer just to experience the event.
Mata Ni Tikina Nacula, Lavinia Naivalu mentioned it wasn’t just about rugby for them.
“It was about pride, unity, and showing the world that even in the outer islands, we can host something truly special.”
Players took to the sandy pitch with trademark Fijian flair, showcasing raw talent that could easily turn heads at national trials.
With the success of the Nacula 7s, the Fiji Sports Council is now exploring the potential to expand the Grassroots Fiji Series across other maritime and highland communities.
