The government has launched a multi-agency crackdown following a toxic wastewater spill in the Sabeto River.

In a statement, the Ministry for Lands and Mineral Resources (MLMR) confirmed the establishment of a high-level Compensation Committee to oversee environmental and social redress.

The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Health, the Water Authority of Fiji, the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) and the Commissioner Western’s office.

Mining operator Lion One Metals Ltd has admitted responsibility for the spill, citing a critical internal miscommunication that saw all three discharge pipes opened instead of a single, controlled release.

Chief operating officer Patrick Hickey has pledged sweeping corrective actions, including:

  • Immediate installation of a new pre-treatment facility
  • Direct engagement with traditional leaders, including the Tui Sabeto and Korobebe Village heads
  • Environmental compensation for fish and eels killed in the spill
  • A full review of the company’s discharge systems and compliance protocols

Under the ministry’s directive, Lion One is also required to lead public outreach efforts, conducting site visits, community briefings and other engagement activities aimed at rebuilding trust.
