Women of Komo, Kabara, in the Lau Group yesterday performed a traditional dance known as the “vakamalolo” during the opening of the Lau Provincial Council meeting at Studio 6 in Suva.

The same dance was performed by the women from this village during the provincial council meeting on the chiefly village of Tubou in Lakeba in the 1980s, during the reign of the late Tui Nayau Ratu Kamisese Mara.

Yesterday’s meeting had Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as chief guest.

Vosa Kotobalavu travelled from Komo for three days on board the government vessel, MV Iloilovatu to teach the village women residing in Suva the dance moves.

“It was an emotional moment for me to see Roko Ului Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, just brought back memories of his late father,” the 60-year-old said.

“Traditionally, the people of Komo were usually entertainers for the late Ratu Mara, whenever there is a function, he will ask us to perform.

“I was also part of the group that performed in Tubou in the 1980s and I am proud to be performing again.”

She said the meke was specifically performed at provincial council meetings. The group was made up of 16 women.
