NETBALL Fiji has hit back at recent public statements questioning its governance and financial management, declaring such claims as “misinformation” and reaffirming its commitment to the sport’s growth in Fiji.
In a strongly worded statement, Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki addressed the controversy, emphasizing the organisation’s dedication to fostering a healthy environment for players, administrators, and volunteers.
“In our role as custodians of the sport we will not engage in any manner or form of discussion that creates division or brings disrepute to netball,” Sorovaki stated.
Financial management and support
The organisation clarified its governance structure and financial practices, stating it operates under a clear constitution and adheres to strict financial protocols, including regular audits and transparent reporting at its Annual General Meeting.
“Just as districts are run on the levies they receive from club membership so too does Netball Fiji. We operate on the levies and affiliation we receive from districts and allocate resources for training and development according to available funding,” Sorovaki said.
Netball Fiji also works closely with funders like the Fiji National Sports Commission and Netball Australia to ensure accountability.
Membership fees and support
“Netball Fiji remains committed to ensuring accessibility to the sport and district leaders are aware of this. There has been discussion on changes to levied amounts at past AGMS and following the 2024 AGM we agreed that after collating proper data we could work together make an informed decision on a levy that worked well for all. Before this could happen the SGM was called,” she said.
Netball Fiji acknowledged the upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM) and confirmed it is being addressed in full compliance with its procedures. The organisation stated it would not discuss any matters related to the SGM to ensure fairness.
Development focus
Netball Fiji is pushing forward with its development programs and support for athletes, despite what it called “misinformation” circulating in recent media reports.
Sorovaki stressed Netball Fiji’s commitment to the sport, stating, “Our focus remains on fostering a healthy and safe environment that supports the sport and its future, our administrators, technical officials, players and volunteers.”
The organisation reiterated its respect for former players and their contribution to the sport, encouraging their continued involvement through mentorship and official roles.
Focus on transparency
In the statement it has also affirmed its commitment to transparency and sound governance.
The organisation is addressing concerns head-on, providing clarity on its financial management, governance structure, and commitment to the growth of netball in Fiji.
Sorovaki said the organization will not engage in discussions that create division or harm the sport’s reputation.
“As the governing body, our responsibility is to protect and develop the sport of netball in Fiji and this will always be done with humility and teachable spirits,” Sorovaki added.
It said that their priority remained on the growth and success of netball in Fiji.
They also urged all stakeholders to engage in productive discussions that advance the sport, rather than create unnecessary division through unverified public statements.
