Some cane access roads in the Northern Division remain in poor condition just days before crushing begins at the Labasa sugar mill, says a local farmer.

“Most of the roads have been fixed, though a few are still left but you can clearly see improvements, especially on the main roads,” said Korotari farmer Satish Chand.

He welcomed recent repair works but criticised past efforts.

“I’m not sure who wasn’t doing their job before. The current government is doing a great job.”

Mr Chand said previous administrations failed to deliver results.

“It seems like the people who were already in the system weren’t performing well. They were just trying to destabilise things.”

He said despite announcements of large spending, farmers often saw no results.

“We hear all the time that millions are being invested, but where was that money going? We ordinary people don’t really know.

“As farmers, we just wait for things to happen. If things don’t improve, then we speak up.”

Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh says contractors have been engaged and the remaining roads will be repaired soon.

Crushing in Labasa begins on June 17.
