KADAVU’S Vunisea power station is saving about $28,000 a month in fuel costs following the commissioning of a solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system under the LAKARO Project.

The project, officially commissioned at Vunisea Government Station last week, has reduced diesel consumption from about 60 drums a month to 20 drums.

Each drum holds 200 litres, cutting diesel use by about 8000 litres a month and delivering estimated annual savings of $336,000.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the project was an important investment in Kadavu’s future.

The project was supported by the governments of the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand through a combined funding contribution of $US2.5million, while the Fiji Government contributed $US350,000 and undertook remedial works at all three LAKARO project sites.
