Life in the spotlight maybe bold and unapologetic for Temesia Tuicaumia, when off duty however it’s a very different story.

“Temesia Tuicaumia off duty is pure homecation,” he said.

“I’m in my bed, binge-watching a TV show, completely relaxed in a dark, blackout room. An hour later, I get up, get dressed, and embrace the day. My sanctuary is my retreat, resting, recharging. Off duty can easily stretch into two days, because sometimes, you just need that pause.”

It is a striking contrast to the high-fashion persona he has built through his menswear label TEMESIA.CO, where structured silhouettes and cultural storytelling dominate the runway.

International showcases and accolades, including his Best Menswear Designer win at Vodafone Fiji Fashion Week have cemented his reputation, yet he remains anchored in the simple act of resetting.

Rituals that ground the day

His day, however, never begins without intention.

“Absolutely. My day begins with a sacred moment, spending time with Jesus. Then, it’s my Fiji facial routine by PURE FIJI, simple luxury, followed by my day and night creams. And of course, I check my socials. It’s my business, my voice, my platform. No skip, no compromise.”

That discipline extends into how he navigates both his public and private worlds.

An observer at heart

Beyond fashion, Tuicaumia’s personality is layered with curiosity and quiet observation, traits that influence both his design work and his engagement with people.

“I love a good laugh and I’m a dedicated people watcher,” he said.

“I can sit anywhere, waiting in line, grabbing a snack at Hunky Dogs, and just take in my environment. I imagine the stories behind every passing face — my psychologist instincts at work. It’s how I stay connected and curious.”

Bold fashion, deeper meaning

That curiosity feeds directly into his bold creative expression.

Known for reimagining the traditional suluvakataga into contemporary menswear, he embraces risk while challenging conventional norms around masculinity and Pacific fashion.

“Most of my wardrobe is bold,” he said.

“When I debuted with crop blazers and crop shirts, Western fashion still finds my suluvakataga bold, and the Pacific diaspora still sees my crop shirts as fearless. I love merging styles, creating statements that are unapologetically me.”

For Tuicaumia, fashion is not merely aesthetic, it is both identity and strategy, particularly in professional and diplomatic spaces.

“A suit with a sulu. Merged,” he explained.

“Because in just five seconds, you can capture attention before you even speak. You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but in this fast-paced world, the cover is just as impactful as the content. Blending Western suits with our suluvakataga is a powerful statement, staying true to my identity while commanding respect. I still mean business.”

Style as identity

Even the pieces he holds closest reflect a deeply personal narrative.

“While seasons change, my statement jewellery remains a constant, an extension of my soul,” he said.

“But if I had to choose, my safari suits are forever etched into my identity. They’re my timeless symbol of who I am.”

The power of stillness

Away from the cameras, however, Tuicaumia values stillness just as much as expression.

“When no one’s watching, I indulge in quiet reflection, listening to the world, soaking in the moment, appreciating the beauty in stillness.”

And while he can command a room when needed, he is equally comfortable stepping back into the role of observer.

“It depends on the season, the room, the energy. When it’s time to be in life, trust me, I’ll step into that role. When it’s time to observe, I embrace the silence. Flexibility is my superpower.”

Rooted in community

His connection to identity runs deeper than clothing, rooted firmly in culture and community.

“Fijian identity is rooted in community, our culture’s heartbeat,” he said.

“It’s about inclusivity, walking together, supporting each other. We know that if we want to go far, we go together. If you want to go fast, go alone. But true strength lies in unity.”

Sanctuaries and purpose

Even his places of escape reflect that need for calm and grounding.

“Tea Totoka at the Yatu Lau Arcade,” he said.

“It’s my secret sanctuary, peaceful and perfect for unwinding and recharging.”

Despite public perception, Tuicaumia is clear about his purpose and the weight of influence he carries.

“My journey is about influence, about making a difference,” he said.

“Diplomacy is cutthroat, but it’s more than just me, it’s about the bigger picture.”

For now, he sums up his current mindset in a single word.

“Discernment. I know when to speak, when to listen, and when to say ‘no’ — because sometimes, that’s the most powerful thing you can do.”
