Sneaky sister

A WOMAN who disapproved of her brother’s bride-to-be tried to cancel the wedding by pretending to be his fiancee.

Ann Duffy, 50, was worried her brother David Greatrex, 52, would have a “disastrous” marriage with Sandra Hardy, 28, so she pretended to be Ms Hardy and called the registry office to call it off, a court heard.

Afterwards Ms Duffy, from Plymouth, UK, called her brother and told him: “I have saved you on the divorce.”

Her attempt at sabotage was unsuccessful – the couple got married on November 25 last year as planned, Yahoo reported. The couple also reported Ms Duffy to the police and she was charged with harassment.

Ms Duffy admitted the charge of harassment in Plymouth Magistrates Court but her lawyer Roger Page said her actions did not prevent the couple from tying the knot.

“What we have here is somebody that has pleaded guilty to harassment without violence,” Mr Page said.

“The defendant still takes the view that her brother is not suited to his wife. In desperation to avoid her brother from making what she regarded as a disastrous move she cancelled the wedding.”

Ms Duffy told police she cancelled the wedding to distress her future sister-in-law, not her brother.

She said she was trying to prevent the marriage because she thought Ms Hardy was taking her mother away. Ms Duffy and Mr Greatrex’s mother had moved in with the couple.

The day after the hearing Ms Duffy posted about the outcome of Facebook.

“So before people want to judge me you need the facts. Good job my family and friends no the truth.

“There is so much they don’t write try make me look bad. People quick to comment when you know nothing. Self opinionated you don’t know FACTS.”

Ms Duffy will be sentenced on February 11.
