DRUG use, HIV and AIDS cases, criminal activities, violence against women and children cases are on the rise, says Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru.
Speaking at the handover of government youth club grants in Lautoka, Mr Saukuru said it was unfortunate but a fact of life.
“And for us at the Ministry of Youth and Sports we will continue to explore alternatives for our youths on how best we can assist them,” he said.
“So, no one is left behind in terms of youth development and sports development as well.
“Every year, government assist’s individuals with $5000 grant or a group of people in a club with income generating projects.
“So, from this handover we expect something bigger from the recipient of this grant, that they will be running a restaurant and that is the hope we have.”
Meanwhile, a portable BBQ Grill worth $1400 was presented to 20-year-old Grant Ian Smith of Lauwaki settlement in Lautoka.
Mr Smith said he was grateful for the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in being chosen a recipient of the Youth Club grant which he had applied for last year.
“I have a BBQ business at the roadside in Lauwaki and hope to expand my business upon receiving this new portable BBQ grill set,” he said.
“I thank my parents and relatives for their trust and support in helping me throughout this BBQ business journey.”
