SLEEPLESS nights and the challenges of boarding school life could not stop Ratu Kadavulevu School under-15 player Dennis Murray from helping his team achieve Vodafone Super Deans Championship glory.
The young Murray was part of the RKS side that edged Marist Brothers High School 17-15 in the U15 final, producing a performance that brought him one step closer to his dream of following his elder brother, Fijian Drua flanker Motikai Murray.
For Dennis, the title was more than just another schoolboy rugby achievement. It was a reminder that the sacrifices he is making at school could eventually help him reach the same heights as his brother, who has played Super Rugby Pacific for the Drua and represented the Flying Fijians.
Dennis admits boarding school life has not always been easy.
“Some challenges I face in school are sleepless nights and sometimes not being fed well, but that’s boarding school life and it takes being patient,” he said.
Those challenges, however, have only strengthened his determination.
He says Motikai remains a major influence on his development and continues to encourage him to work hard.
“He always encourages me to play hard so I can reach his level. My dream is to one day play with him.”
The Deans triumph was therefore a significant milestone for the young player, who also thanked God for the victory and the talent given to his elder brother.
“I thank God for today’s win and for also giving my elder brother the talent he has.”
While Dennis celebrated his first taste of Deans success, Motikai has been making his own statement on the rugby field in New Zealand.
The Drua flanker has been in blistering form in the National Provincial Championship, performances that have earned him a recall to the Flying Fijians squad for the defence of the Pacific Nations Cup.
For Dennis, his brother’s success provides a powerful example of what can be achieved.
The sleepless nights may continue, but so too will the dream of one day playing alongside Motikai at the highest level.
