I WONDER if linguists have the authority to include colloquial slang words like baksis into the formal Fijian language as suggested to us by Donald Singh(FT 28/3/15)
If they do, I suggest they also include a brief explanation to the derivative of the word e.g ravisi is derived from English word rubbish.
I thought that the word baksis is derived from the Fijian word vakasisi (full) of vakasinai.
The Fijian slang word belavu commonly refers to dairy farms is derived from the English words bell and hub to mean the clanging of bells from the milking hubs informing the cows of milking times thus the word belavu.
Maybe linguists can enlighten us on this.
